Leo Tolstoy

Did You Know?

Gandhi was influenced by Tolstoy's views on non-violence. A Letter to a Hindoo was written by Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das expressing his belief in non-violence in India's struggle for freedom. This letter was published in Free Hindustan and this letter also revealed his perception of Christianity. Jay Parini's novel, The Last Station was made into a film based on Tolstoy. It was directed by Michael Hoffman with Christopher Plummer as Tolstoy and Helen Mirren as Sofya Tolstoya. Both of them were nominated to the Oscar for their roles. Virginia Woolf regarded Tolstoy as the greatest novelist while James Joyce said, "He is never dull, never stupid, never tired, never pedantic, never theatrical!" Others such as Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Anton Chekhov, Thomas Mann, Marcel Proust, William Faulkner, and Vladimir Nabokov admired his works too.
